5 can't-miss apps: Airtime, theSkimm, Zenege and more
With Apple dropping the new rose gold Macbook and Yahoo getting closer and closer to a sale, you may have missed some of this week's best new apps. Each weekend, we round up a few of our favorite new and updated apps. This week's list includes a group messaging app from Napster's founder, a music-making app and new spin on a classic game. Check out the gallery below to see our top picks. If you're looking for more, take a look at our last roundup of can't-miss apps. Created by Napster cofounder Sean Parker, Airtime is a group messaging app that emphasizes sharing with the people you’re chatting with. You can use the chats to watch videos and listen to music with the friends you’re chatting with or share live video of yourself. Pro-tip: Use the app’s signal feature to quickly get the attention of everyone in your group. Free: iOS and A wonderfully visual way of making music on your iPhone, Noiz allows you to create musical mashups by swiping, tapping and holding down onto the various shapes — each of which represents a different instrument or sound. It comes with a handful of preset songs you can make into your own with endless variations. Pro-tip: Head over to the settings menu to customize the settings for the individual instruments in each song. Free: iOS Snake may be one of the oldest games around yet game developers still manage to find ways to make it epically addicting. In Slither.io you start each game as a small snake slithering around with your opponents — who are playing in real time — while scooping up food and getting bigger. You can run into yourself but hitting another snake kills you (and turns you into food for your opponents.) Pro-tip: Even the tiniest snakes can take out much larger opponents if they move fast enough — the bigger you get the harder it is to move quickly. Free: iOS Created by the company behind the popular email newsletter of the same name, theSkimm aims to bring a supercharged version of the daily newsletter to your phone. The app integrates with your calendar and puts all the most important need-to-know events on your calendar for you — from current events like election dates to when popular concert tickets will go on sale to and when new series are coming to Netflix. Pro-tip: All calendar items created by theSkimm begin with an emoji so you can easily distinguish them from the rest of your calendar. Free: iOS (required $2.99/month subscription after the first month) A beautiful puzzle game, Zenge is meant to be more of a relaxing journey than a fast-paced game. Each level consists of a series of puzzle piece you must slide into place in order to uncover the beautiful world underneath. There are no time limits or lives or points but each puzzle gets progressively more complicated. Pro-tip: You often need to move several other pieces just to get one piece into place so plan your moves carefully. $0.99: iOS Have something to add to this story?
