Apple just released iOS 10.1, the first major update to the iPhone and iPad's mobile operating system since iOS 10 launched in September. For iPhone 7 Plus users, the update officially brings Portrait mode, the camera feature that creates photos with a blurred-out background. Portrait mode will continue to be an ongoing public beta, but iPhone 7 Plus users no longer need to install the public beta in order to get it. As always, the easiest way to update your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to iOS 10.1 is to go to Settings > General > Software Update and download it over-the-air (OTA). iOS 10.1 weighs about 200MB and we recommend connecting to a Wi-Fi network to download adn install it instead of eating into your data plan. If the update is taking forever to download, your best option is to try again later when Apple's servers aren't being slammed by everyone simultaneously downloading it. Alternatively, you can also connect your supported iOS device to your PC or Mac and update through iTunes. It's rare you'll lose any data, but it's always better to be safe than sorry. Google Photos is also a great way to keep a backup of all your photos and videos. If you go with the free tier, you'll be able to store an unlimited amount of photos at up to 16 megapixels and video at up to 1080p full HD resolution; to store video at up to 4K resolution, you'll need to pay for storage.

Android 7.0 Nougat has arrived. For the most part, Nougat's noteworthy features are under-the-hood changes like the better Doze battery and data saver, split-screen mode and a whole bunch of new emoji. Nougat isn't a top-down revamp, but it's still a worthy update for the nut- and bolt-tightening and security updates that'll protect your phone from malicious software. As always, if you've got a Nexus phone or tablet, you get Nougat first. Supported devices include: Nexus 6, Nexus 9, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus Player, Pixel C and General Mobile 4G (Android One). To install Nougat, you'll need to sign up for the Android Beta Program. Sign in with your Google account and then select your compatible device. Follow the instructions to download the Nougat beta over the air (OTA). Once that's installed you may see a notification to update to the official public stable release of Nougat. If you don't see that, you can go to Settings > About phone > System updates to download and install the update. Not interested in joining the beta? Then you'll have to wait for the update to arrive OTA. It's being pushed out to Nexus devices in waves, so if you don't see it immediately, it may take a few days. Alternatively, you can install Nougat by "flashing" your Nexus device with the newest "factory images" available here. Warning: This method is a little more advanced and there's a greater possibility of accidentally bricking your Nexus device if you don't follow the directions correctly. Full directions can be found here. Installing over-the-air (OTA)
