Google's big Android Wear 2.0 update is delayed

If you were hoping to hear more about the next version of Android Wear at Google's big hardware event next week, you might not want to get your hopes up just yet.

Google has now pushed back the date for the official release of the update to "early 2017."

The company didn't provide a reason for the change, which was buried at the bottom of a post on its Android Developers blog.

But the delay isn't terribly surprising to those who have been following closely. Earlier this month, CNET reported that many of Google's biggest Android Wear partners, including LG, Lenovo and Huawei, wouldn't be releasing new watches before the end of the year.

Given that it wouldn't have any new watches from many of its biggest partners, it makes sense that Google would want to delay the launch to coincide with new hardware. (We have seen a few new Android Wear devices from smaller partners, like Michael Kors and Asus.)

The update, originally slated for release this fall, adds standalone app functionality, new text input options and other features. Google also launched the third version of its developer preview Thursday, which adds a watch-specific version of Google's Play Store. This will allow you to download apps to your watch independently of your smartphone.

Delays aren't the only problems Google is facing with Android Wear. Many smartwatches are apparently not working with Apple's iPhone 7, according to a report in 9to5Mac. The source of the issue is unclear but Google has reportedly made Apple aware of the issue.

Asus unveils flashy ZenWatch 3 with round screen and 2-day battery

BERLIN — Asus is joining the round club.

The Taiwan-based consumer electronics company announced its latest smartwatch at IFA 2016, the ZenWatch 3, featuring a round display .

The ZenWatch 3 joins a vast number of smartwatches with round displays including the Samsung Gear S2, Moto 360, Huawei Watch and Fossil's Q-series.

The smartwatch features a 1.39-inch AMOLED display (400 x 400 resolution) set on a 316L stainless steel watch case, which Asus says is 82 percent stronger than regular steel, for a more jewelry-like look. It'll be available in three finishes: Rose gold, gunmetal and silver. It's also thinner than the Apple Watch at 0.39-inches thick.

Watch strap options include stitched Italian leather for a dressy look or rubber for a sportier aesthetic.

The ZenWatch 3 has three crown buttons and the top one is customizable for use with Android Wear. The smartwatch works with both Android and iOS phones and tablets.

It's powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor, 512MB of RAM and comes with 4GB of internal storage.

Asus says the smartwatch's battery can last up to two days on a single charge. It's also quick to charge up. A 15-minute charge gives the smartwatch up to 60 percent battery.

In addition to over 50 selectable watch faces, the ZenWatch 3 includes automatic activity tracking using its myriad sensors to detection motion. One feature plucked from the Apple Watch — reminders to stand up.

Asus didn't announce availability or pricing for the U.S. The only thing the company announced was pricing for Europe: €229, which is about $254.

Someone figured out how to play 'Counter-Strike' on a smartwatch

Thứ Ba, 26 tháng 4, 2016 - 0 Comments

Cutting-edge technology doesn't stay cutting-edge for long. Case in point: Counter-Strike, a popular 3D-graphics intensive first-person shooter game that required a powerful PC when it came out in 2000, now runs on an Android Wear smartwatch.

That's right, the smartwatch on your wrist is now as powerful as a computer as desktop computer from 16 years ago.

As shown in the video above, YouTuber Dave Bennett figured out how to get Counter-Strike working on his LG G Watch.

Sure, it's not the most practical way to play the game with the smartwatch's tiny, tiny touchscreen, but it's still impressive as a technical feat. It perfectly illustrates how far technology has advanced.

The smartwatch is a two-year device so there's some noticeable lag, but my hunch is the lag would disappear if Bennett gets it running on new Android Wear smartwatches. Of course, that might be easier said than done since the newest Android Wear smartwatches have round displays, not rectangular screens.

Recently, someone managed to emulate Counter-Strike on an Android smartphone. Can we get some Counter-Strike on HoloLens or in VR next?
