7 careers that don’t require a traditional office
Think your only career options involve sitting at a desk in an office? Think again. When it comes to many professions, offices are outdated. People simply don’t need a brick-and-mortar headquarters for their jobs, and are better served working remotely, wherever that may be. Here are just seven of the many career options that you can get into where you won’t be tethered to a cubicle. When your job is to write about travel, you kind of have to, you know, travel to the places you’re writing about so you can experience the scenery and local culture. This means you need to rely on a suitcase and your mobile devices much more than on an actual office. It may sound weird, but with this type of gig the world is not only your oyster, it’s your office. Many affluent people and families have personal chefs who live close-by (and sometimes in-house) and take care of all their dietary needs. In this sort of role, you substitute kitchens and markets for a traditional office. Technically, if you’re a restaurant chef, you don’t need an office either. You can take care of most of your operations from the kitchen. If there’s paperwork to be done, there’s always the dining room during off-hours. When you’re planning weddings and other events, the majority of your work can be done remotely. In fact, event planners often set up shop for periods of time at the venue where they’ll be working. So your "office" is basically wherever you plop down your bag and set up your mobile devices. If you’re selling or leasing houses and apartments, your time is best spent making your way around to show people their potential homes. It’s tough to sell a house to someone from an office that’s miles away. If anything, the closest thing you’ll have to an office is your car. There is, of course, plenty of paperwork involved in the realtor business, but most of it can be digitised. These days, you can do most of the deal-sealing in the actual house or apartment itself. If you enjoy the travelling life and dislike the idea of having to stay in one place for a long time, training to become a commercial airline pilot (or pilot of another sort) may be right down your alley. It enables you to trade in the traditional office for hotels and hangars. You will, of course, be required to sit in the same confined area for hours at a time, but it’s very unlike being in an office in that you’re flying an airplane. Doesn’t at least some little part of you want to be able to tell people that your office is the sky? If you love the beach and the great outdoors, and you hate the thought of a profession that requires a cubicle, you may want to head for the coast. You’ll get to spend days at a time outside, and when you’re not on the clock you can take advantage of all the fun activities coastal towns offer. And you’ll never be low on Vitamin D. No matter the cultural or economical climate, people will always cherish grabbing a drink — and many of them like to do so to cap off the day they’ve just spent in a traditional office environment. Why not be the person who hooks them up with their beverage of choice? And while you’re at it, you can become a certified mixologist. They’re not only experts in making pretty much any drink, they create their very own. Many of them travel the world to help different bars and restaurants set up their drink menus. For many of the above jobs, you can get by without a laptop or tablet, as long as you have a great smartphone that can help take care of your business. A phone like the Honor 8: The new, Millennial-minded smartphone. It provides a high-quality dual lens camera, long-lasting battery and other innovative features to help you conduct your business and document the fun you have while doing so.
