Apple Music came late to the music-streaming party and has been trying to play catch up to services such as Spotify. But it doesn't offer too much over competitors and could use a few fresh features.

Now, the Apple rumor mill suggests Apple is expected to announce an Apple Music overhaul at its Worldwide Developer's Conference in June, according to Bloomberg. Meanwhile, tech blog 9 to 5 Mac reports the updates will be coming with iOS 10.

If the rumors are legit, Apple Music will be getting a new interface to make the service more intuitive, an expanded online radio footprint and improved integration between streaming and downloading music.

Apple Music will be getting a new interface

The new interface includes some aesthetic changes and simplification of tasks, as well as integration of 3D Touch shortcuts.

"The new user-interface ditches the current colorful and translucent look in favor of a simpler design that emphasizes black and white backgrounds and text," Mark Gurman of 9 to 5 Mac notes. "For instance, the user interface in the albums view will no longer change in appearance based on the color of a particular album’s art."

Apple Music could be getting attractive new features too, including song lyric integration built into the app. The blog also said the "New" tab will no longer be a part of the app.

These changes are reportedly being overseen by Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor and content head Robert Kondrk, Bloomberg said. Input is believed to come from design chief Jony Ive's team, Beats executive Jimmy Iovine, and Eddy Cue, senior vice president in charge of Internet services.

The news doesn't come as a surprise. With Apple's stock is down, due to a lack of hardware sales, the company may be looking to push harder on its software front.

While Apple used to dominate the music industry with iTunes, its move to streaming has kicked the company from the throne. Apple wasn't quick enough to adopt the listening trend, so it's looking to spur growth in Apple Music. However, it's important to note that Spotify's paid userbase rapidly swelled past 20 million in June 2015, while Apple Music's latest number was 11 million in February 2016.

Landing exclusives isn't enough of a pull for listeners, and Kanye West and Beyonce have shown us that exclusives don't tend to last very long. If your favorite artist releases a new album on Apple Music only, just wait a few days and it'll inevitably spread out to other services.

An Apple Music revamp could be enough of a jolt to get more people interested in the platform, but it will be pretty tough to pull people away from Spotify, which is already incredibly popular.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

BONUS: Spotify, Tidal, Pandora, oh my! Is it bad to have so many music streaming services?
